By Alex MacLean / The Union Democrat

A Fremont man died Friday afternoon in a rollover accident at Shawmut Road and Highway 120.

The

49-year-old man was driving east at a "high rate of speed" on Highway

120 when he attempted to make a left turn onto Shawmut Road around 4:05

p.m. and lost control of his car, said California Highway Patrol.

The

driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from his 1961

Volkswagen as it flipped numerous times on its right side, CHP said.

He landed face down on the asphalt and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to an incident report.

CHP is withholding the name of the victim pending family notification, the report stated.

It was unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, CHP said.
