Two people were injured in separate vehicle crashes Tuesday in Calaveras County.

In the first, Everett Crowston, 80, of Copperopolis, was driving a 1999 GMC Sonoma pickup truck east on Highway 4 just west of O'Byrnes Ferry Road about 6:10 p.m.

At the same time, Nicolas Lefler, 33, of Douglas Flat, was driving a 1996 Mazda sedan in the opposite direction on the highway.

Both were traveling about 55 mph in rainy conditions, the California Highway Patrol report said.

An electrical malfunction with Crowston's alternator caused the headlights to shut off, the report said.

Not being able to see, Crowston ran off the south side of the road, where hestruck a reflector. He thenturned sharply to his left, causing his truck to overturn as it crossed the traffic lanes directly into Lefler's path, the report said.

Crowston's front end collided with the left side of Lefler's vehicle. Crowston's truck came to a rest on its right side, blocking the westbound lane.

Lefler was able to drive his car to the shoulder, where he came to a stop.

Crowston suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Mark Twain St. Joseph's Hospital in San Andreas for treatment, the report said.

At 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, James Carson, 70, of Altaville, was driving a 2003 Ford F-150 pickup truck west on Highway 4, just west of Appaloosa Road, about 40 mph, the CHP report said.

At the same time, Diane Fullaway, 57, of Angels Camp, was traveling in the opposite direction in a 2005 Ford F-250 pickup truck.

As Carson crested a rise in the road, his truck started to fishtail, the report said.

In an attempt to keep control, he turned to his left but overcorrected, causing his vehicle to cross over the center of the road directly into Fullaway's path, and they collided head-on, the report said.

Carson suffered minor injuries and was taken to Mark Twain St. Joseph's Hospital in San Andreas for treatment, the report said.

Both were wearing their seat belts, the report said.
