The Sonora Area Foundation announced Thursday that it will award two grants to assist in Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

The foundation collected $5,870 in community donations in the weeks following the hurricane, which made landfall at the end of October.

One portion of the funds - $2,935 - is headed to the Community Foundation of New Jersey's New Jersey Recovery Fund.

All donations to the fund will help "intermediate and long-term" recovery efforts in impacted areas of the state, according to a statement from the foundation.

Another $2,935 will go to Island Harvest, a food bank serving Long Island. The Sonora Area Foundation release noted that the demand for Island Harvest's services increased significantly after Hurricane Sandy struck.

The Sonora Area Foundation is keeping its Hurricane Sandy relief fund open until the end of the year and plansto make a final grant award after Jan. 1.

Community members can donate by writing checks to the Sonora Area Foundation with "Hurricane Sandy Relief" written on the notes or memo line.] The checks may be sent to P.O. Box 577, Sonora, CA 95370, or delivered to the foundation's office at 362 S. Stewart St. For more information, call 533-2596 or visit www.sonora-area.org.
