Woman critical after Copper crash

Christina O'Haver, The Union Democrat

A 49-year-old woman was in critical condition Tuesday after crashing her car into a boulder in Copperopolis.

Valerie Jean Maschal, of Copperopolis, was driving a 2009 Ford Mustang north on Little John Road at an unknown speed around 9:15 a.m. when she entered the dirt shoulder north of Quiver Street and crashed into a boulder, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

The vehicle bounced back into the northbound lane and came to a rest on its hood.

Maschal, who was wearing a seat belt, was flown to Modesto Memorial Hospital with major injuries.

The collision was still under investigation Tuesday.
