Cal Fire lifts burning restrictions

Union Democrat staff /

Cal Fire lifted seasonal restrictions on burn hours effective Saturday morning.

Burning is now allowed at all hours on permissive burn days on private land in the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit and in parts of the Stanislaus National Forest protected by Cal Fire.

Burn permits are required and pile size is restricted to 4 feet by 4 feet.

"Even with the cooler weather, a fire can still escape," said Cal Fire spokeswoman Lisa Williams. "It is critical that the person conducting the burn keep close watch on the fire at all times."

People can be held liable for damage and suppression costs if their fires escape.

To find out if it is a permissive burn day, call 754-6600 in Calaveras County, 533-5598 in Tuolumne County or 532-5601 for the Stanislaus National Forest.
