A Sonora woman died Sunday after suffering traumatic injuries in a multi-car accident Saturday night in Orange County.

Marylou Oneal, 89, of Sonora, was in a car with her son, driver Jon Oneal, and his wife, Crystal, when an out-of-control vehicle struck the car next to them, which in turn crashed into their PT Cruiser, according to family members.

The accident occurred around 9 p.m. on Interstate 405, near the Beach Boulevard exit.

The family was in the carpool lane headed toward Jon Oneal's Lakewood home after attending his daughter's wedding, said Marylou Oneal's daughter, Sharon Krauss, of Sonora.

Marylou Oneal was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center, where she was treated for multiple fractures and internal bleeding.

She never regained consciousness, Krauss said.

Her son and daughter-in-law were treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital.

Mrs. Oneal moved to the Sonora area from Southern California nearly 20 years ago with her late husband, Stanley Dean Oneal. She was a skilled pianist and member of two local bands - the Flashbacks and the Dixieland Band - and was choral accompanist for the Sonora Hills Choir.

The accident closed a section of the freeway while emergency crews worked at the scene, Krauss said.
