Big swing in weather ahead

Coming amid a topsy turvy election week, record high temperatures and low snow are forecast this week.

Temperatures early this week are expected to be 10 to 20 degrees above normal for this time of year. The high temperature today could reach 88 degrees in Sonora and 85 in Angels Camp, according to the National Weather Service. The high Tuesday in Sonora is expected to reach 89 and 86 in Angels Camp. Overnight lows will be in the mid-40s

The previous record-high for Nov. 5 in Sonora was 86 degrees, reached in 1949. The previous record high for Nov. 6 was 84, set in 1976.

Beginning Wednesday, temperatures will begin to dip drastically.

A cold front moving in from Alaska should bring cloudy skies. Temperatures will drop into the mid-70s in Sonora and Angels Camp on Wednesday and the high-60s Thursday.

Thursday brings a 50 percent chance of rain during the day. Showers are likely overnight through Friday. During the predicted storm, daytime temperatures could drop into the mid- to high-50s, with overnight lows in the mid-30s in both Angels Camp and Sonora.

Sonora, Ebbetts and Tioga passes are open but will most likely close because of predicted snow. Snow is expected around 5,000 feet on Thursday, dropping as low as 2,500 feet by Friday morning, the National Weather Service said.

Higher mountain passes could see 8 inches of snow.

Outdoor enthusiasts are advised to prepare for the changing weather.

Caltrans advised motorists to prepare for the upcoming storm season and to have their vehicles winterized and to check road conditions before driving.
