Sex crimes net five-year sentence

By Alex MacLean / The Union Democrat

A Columbia man received five years and four months in state prison when he was sentenced Monday in Tuolumne County Superior Court.

Mark Mansfield, 36, a previously convicted sex offender, was sentenced on two felony sex offenses related to interactions he had earlier this year with two girls under 18 years old, including one as young as 15.

He accepted a plea agreement with the Tuolumne County District Attorney's Office on Sept. 10 that stipulated the maximum time in prison he could receive.

Mansfield had previously been convicted of a felony in 2003 for committing lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14. He didn't receive prison time in that case but was required to register his address and other personal information on the public Megan's Law website, which last had him listed at a residence in Mokelumne Hill.

The prior strike under California's "Three Strikes Law" doubled the amount of time Mansfield received on one felony count.

Mansfield has been in custody at Tuolumne County Jail since his arrest on March 28 at a residence on North Airport Road in Columbia, where he was living at the time.

Assigned Superior Court Judge William G. Polley gave Mansfield credit for 209 actual days already served in custody.

Assistant District Attorney John Hansen indicated that Mansfield would be required to serve 80 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole because of his prior conviction.
