Ballot errors found

The Tuolumne County Elections Office will reissue about 2,480 of the nearly 22,000 mail-in ballots it sent out last week, following the discovery of errors.

The Elections Office reviewed the ballots after receiving a phone call from a voter on Monday morning. The staff found an incorrect number of open seats for two school districts, a fire district and a community services district.

"We'd like to be perfect but we are human," Tuolumne County Clerk and Auditor-ControllerDebi Russell Bautista said Tuesday. "We should have caught it."

Summerville High and Summerville Elementary School districts were each listed on the ballot with three seats instead of two, Columbia Fire District with one seat instead of two and Lake Don Pedro Community Service District with one seat instead of three, Russell Bautista said.

Only voters in those districts will receive new sample and absentee ballots, which will be mailed today.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Elections Office had received about a dozen faulty ballots completed by voters.

The Elections Office will send new ballots to the voters and contact the individuals before the election if they do not recast their votes, Russell Bautista said. If they still do not respond, the votes from their original ballots will be counted.

The Elections Office has not yet received a bill for the new ballots but Russell Bautista expects to be charged about $1 per reissued ballot.
