San Andreas school evacuated

By Alex MacLean, The Union Democrat

San Andreas Elementary School has been evacuated due to a nearby gas leak at Gold Strike and Neilsen roads.

The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office announced all students have been evacuated to Calaveras High School for parents and transportation.

The evacuation order was issued about 1:40 p.m., according to Calaveras High School officials.

All students at San Andreas Elementary School walked over to Calaveras High School during the evacuation, officials said.

The Sheriff's Office advised northwest San Andreas residents Monday they might hear a loud noise similar to a jet engine while PG&E workers relieved pressure from a gas main in the area Sept. 18 through 20, from 5 to 8 a.m. each morning.

It was unclear if the work played a role in Wednesday's leak, and PG&E representatives were not immediately available for comment.
