Workshop will address Pinecrest Lake water

The Tuolumne Utilities District will hold a public workshop at 10 a.m. Thursday to discuss the district's water needs as they pertain to the lake level at Pinecrest Reservoir.

The State Water Resources Control Board mandated that the lake level at Pinecrest Reservoir be set at 5,608 feet in order to accommodate environmental and recreational uses, with the possibility of lowering the level to 5,606 in very dry years.

TUD is proposing the district andPG&E, which administers the lake, be able to operate the lake "as it has throughout history" by submitting a plan that keeps the lake as high as possible, but doesn't set strict restrictions in dry years.

TUD bases its yearly water plan on being able to access about 24,500 acre-feet of water with about 18,000 acre-feet coming from Pinecrest Reservoir, according to TUD general manager Pete Kampa.

"Unfortunately the Pinecrest Lake level restriction reduces our available summer water supply to very minimal amounts and will require mandatory water conservation by TUD customers in many years," he said in a written statement. "The restriction all but eliminates water supply available for future customers of TUD."

The purpose of Thursday's workshop will be for the State Water Board to answer questions and receive comments from the public on the modified Pinecrest Reservoir plan.

The meeting will be held in the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors Chambers on the fourth floor at 2 S. Green St., Sonora.
