Man drowns in Pinecrest Lake

By Alex MacLean, The Union Democrat

A 20-year-old man drowned Saturday while swimming with friends at Pinecrest Lake.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office identified the man as Arcata resident Nicholas Alexander Gaerlen.

Witnesses at the scene said Gaerlen did not call for help or appear to be in trouble prior to going under the water. The Sheriff's Office said a contributing factor may have been that he was wearing long pants and steel-toed boots.

See Tuesday's The Union Democrat for more details.
