Summerville High School: Budget report on Wednesday docket

The Summerville Union High School District Board of Education will hear a budget report and a variety of other updates at its regular board meeting Wednesday.

The budget report to be presented by Summerville Chief Business Official Tonya Midget will reflect the "closing of the books" for the 2011-12 school year, staff said. Also at the meeting, a presentation will be given on visual and performing arts at the district.

The board will address several personnel-related items, including the approval of Debbie Mager for the position of athletic director. The position was previously held by varsity volleyball coach and math teacher Kristy Dwyer.

A discussion of limits on coaching responsibilities has been postponed until a new athletic handbook can be drawn up and overall goals established for the athletic program, according to Summerville Superintendent John Keiter.

Later at Wednesday's meeting, the board will consider passing a resolution in support of Proposition 30, known as the Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act of 2012.

Proposition 30 would raise sales taxes by a quarter of a cent and increase income taxes for wealthy individuals. Not all of the money raised would go to schools, but proponents say the passage of the initiative would prevent additional "trigger cuts" to cash-strapped school districts.

The resolution is on Wednesday's agenda at the request of Summerville's chapter of the California Federation of Teachers, Keiter said.

PUBLIC MEETING: Summerville Union High School District Board of Trustees, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Summerville High School Library, 17555 Tuolumne Road, Tuolumne.
