Calaveras deputy shoots at, misses man

A Valley Springs man was released on bail after allegedly pointing a shotgun at a Calaveras County Sheriff's deputy, who shot at and missed the man during an early Sunday morning incident.

Michael Garner Ward, 26, was arrested after an officer-involved shooting at 12:40 a.m. in front of Ward's listed residence on Pelican Place, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Sheriff's Office said a deputy, who was responding to a reported alcohol-related disturbance at the home, noticed a man with a shotgun standing outside.

Sheriff's Capt. Jim Macedo said the suspect pointed the shotgun at the deputy before he could get out of his patrol car. The deputy then shot at the suspect but did not hit him, Macedo said.

Another man at the residence wrestled the weapon away from Ward, Macedo said.

Following the incident, Ward was booked into Calaveras County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The deputy was transported to Mark Twain St. Joseph's Hospital for treatment of minor ear injuries as a result of firing his gun in a confined space, Macedo said.

According to Macedo, the deputy was later released and is currently on paid administrative leave while the Sheriff's Office and Calaveras County District Attorney's Office investigate the shooting in accordance with standard policies and procedures.

Ward was released from jail after posting $40,000 bail and has yet to be charged by prosecutors because additional charges for a possible physical altercation before deputies arrived are still being investigated by the Sheriff's Office, Macedo said.
