Jobless rate

The number of unemployed people in Calaveras and Tuolumne counties rose between May and June, but held relatively steady year-over-year, according to newly released state unemployment statistics.

The number of jobless adults seeking work in Tuolumne County in June was 3,430, or 13.6 percent of the workforce. That was up from 3,310 people, 13.3 percent, in May.

June's figure was up slightly from June 2010, when 13.4 percent were jobless.

The unemployment rate in Calaveras County was 15.4 percent in June, up from 14.7 percent in May.

The unemployment rate compared unfavorably with the state and nation as a whole.

Statewide, the unemployment rate was 12.1 percent in June. The U.S. unemployment rate was 9.3 percent.

May's California jobless rate was 11.4 percent and the nation's was 8.7 percent.
