Angels Camp introduces Wi-Fi

The historic district of Angels Camp introduced free Wi-Fi Friday for visitors and residents. The hotspot is the latest project of the Angels Camp Brand Leadership Team in their effort to make the historic downtown more resident and visitor-friendly, said BLT President Anne Forrest.

HStar, Inc., a Calaveras County-based communications consulting company owned by Tim Hildebrand, was awarded the contract to set up and manage the system once the plan received approval from the Angels Camp Planning Commission, Forrest said.

The hotspot is available along South Main Street from the top of the

hill on the north down to Angels Creek at the south end of the

district. Three businesses - the Calaveras County Visitors Center, The

Pickle Barrel and the Angels Camp World Mercantile - have previously

provided free Wi-Fi for their customers. The new system is designed to

extend Wi-Fi into all shops and restaurants along that three-block

section of the city.

Signs displaying the "Free Wi-Fi Hotspot" symbol were installed at

each end of South Main Street Friday, and each business in the area

will be given a decal with the same information to display at their

place of business, Forrest said.

"Given that most travelers today use some form of wireless

communication, the historic downtown area has had little free Wi-Fi

access and spotty cell phone reception, making the area very unfriendly

for wireless communications and very dated for businesses, residents

and visitors," Forrest said. "The Wi-Fi Hotspot should begin to remedy

this problem."

Merchants will soon have the opportunity to advertise on the local portal access page, she said.

Forrest added that the closed secure system, with a strong

bandwidth and fast service, will be a boon for businesses in the area

and can become a draw for entrepreneurs and other start-up businesses.
