ServSafe Certification class offered March 14

The Business Alliance of Tuolumne County this month will offer a one-day ServSafe Certification class for food handlers and owners of all food service facilities in Tuolumne, Calaveras, and Mariposa counties.

A test will be given and a certificate issued for all attendees who participate in the class and pass the exam.

The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 14 at the Best Western Sonora Oaks Conference Center, at 19551 Hess Ave., East Sonora.

Register by the March 11 deadline by calling the Tuolumne County Chamber of Commerce at 532-4212 or log on to . The cost is $150 per person and seating is limited.

Senate Bill 602 requires food handlers who are involved in the

preparation, storage or service of food in a food facility have to have

a valid food safety certificate, effective June 11, 2011.

Temporary food facilities are exempt and do not require a food card.

According to the California Health and Safety Code: "Each food

facility shall have an owner or employee who has successfully passed

an approved and accredited food safety certification examination. The

certified owner or employee need not be present at the food facility

during all hours of operation."

Renewal of ServSafe certification for food handlers and owners is required every five years.

Class instructor will be Tom Bruce, a restaurant consultant and

educator serving the hospitality industry for more than 35 years. Bruce

is sponsored by the Small Business Administration and the Small

Business Development Center.
