Japanese restaurant moves to new Sonora location

Walt Cook, The Union Democrat

A Sonora Japanese restaurant shut down by a fire more than a year ago has reopened in a new location.

The Koto Japanese Restaurant is open for business at 70 W. Stockton St., near the lower Save Mart. The site is the former location of Nadaga Sushi. Nadaga closed in the fall of 2009 following the death of its sushi chef.

Koto, meanwhile, was forced to shut its doors after a December 2009 fire severely damaged its downtown location, 293 S. Washington St.

The fire, caused by an electrical wiring problem, also damaged Bombay Indian Cuisine, which also subsequently closed.

Koto is open for lunch Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

and open for dinner from Monday through Saturday, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A soft opening occurred late last month.

Though it has a new location, Koto's business model is the same:

Serve traditional Japanese cuisine, including boxed meals, soups and

sushi. The menu is largely unchanged. Like the former location, the new

building has a sushi bar, where patrons can watch the chef prepare

their meals.

There has been an addition in the lineup, though. In addition to

the culinary skills of owner and sushi chef Hideo Ogawa, another sushi

chef - Ogawa's son-in-law - has been brought on board.

Ogawa's daughter - Cherie Myong - is also helping out with the family business.

In the meantime, the former location of Koto remains unusable. A

permit to demolish the building that housed both Koto and Bombay Indian

Cuisine was granted by Sonora officials last year.

According to an estimate by the city's Building and Planning

Department, the building would cost $500,000 to remodel, and

potentially far more to replace.
