Lowe’s to open before Christmas

Lenore Rutherford, The Union Democrat /

The new Lowe's Home Improvement store in Sonora is set for a soft opening on Christmas Eve, with a grand opening celebration planned for Dec. 30.

The contractor, Jackson-Dean, is set to turn the keys over to Lowe's next Tuesday, according to Sonora Community Development Director Ed Wyllie.

"The Lowe's people will finish their high-rack storage, then start

stocking the building around Nov. 23rd," he said. "It looks like they

are right on target to open by Christmas."

Wyllie said the contractors did a testing of all the heating,

cooling, electrical and plumbing systems last week to avoid last-minute

problems.

"Since we are a home improvement store, we have a little twist on

the normal ribbon cutting ceremony," Lowe's spokesman Gerard Littlejohn

said. "We have a board cutting ceremony."

The 94,000-square-foot store will employ about 120 people,

Littlejohn said. Job seekers can apply online at the Web site

lowes.com/careers.

Littlejohn said typically when stores get close to completion, job openings start to appear on the site.

"We encourage people to dip and dive through the jobs to see what

piques their interest and what they are qualified for," he said. "The

nice thing is that both full-time and part-time jobs come with

benefits."

The Lowe's project has been in the works since 2004. After the

original review process, the project was held up in litigation by the

Tuolumne County Citizens for Responsible Growth.

The court decision in that case led to an environmental impact

report and a second review process. Construction began last March.
