Economic Development Director Larry Cope was elected to the board of a state economic development organization last week.

Cope, the much-acclaimed director of the Tuolumne County Economic Development Authority, will join the board of the California Association for Local Economic Development.

"It was a surprise," Cope said. "I had put my hat in the ring when I

came to Tuolumne County, but I knew my first year here I didn't want

any distractions."

The position constitutes a three-year term and involves quarterly

meetings and teleconferencing, which Cope assures will not take time

away from his TCEDA duties.

In fact, he believes that the new position will add to his ability

to foster economic development in Tuolumne County by expanding his

connections among private, state and federal agencies.

"It gives a good opportunity to influence policy statewide," he said.

CALED is a nonprofit organization of economic development

professionals that provide assistance to members to help them provide

better development services to their communities.

It was established in 1980, and currently has more than 1000 members from local, state, federal and private agencies.

This announcement adds to the long list of organizations that Cope

is already involved in, including the Central Sierra Economic

Partnership and the Tuolumne County Revolving Loan Fund.
