The home where County Supervisor Tom Tryon spent his childhood summers will soon help create memories for other families.

The four-bedroom house and one-bedroom guest cottage sit on a hilltop on the 800-acre Tryon family ranch, not far from Highway 4 and within walking distance of historic downtown Angels Camp.

At last night's city Planning Commission meeting, commissioners granted Tryon a conditional use permit to make the home a vacation rental.

A new condition was added to the permit obtaining a food facilities permit from Calaveras County.

City Planner Amy Augustine explained that even though Tryon will not be preparing meals for the families who rent the house, Calaveras County's Environmental Health Department requires a food facilities permit.

"It just means that Mr. Tryon will have to fill out more paperwork," she told the commissioners.

"And pay a fee," Tryon added from his seat in the audience.

"This would probably allow them to serve food for weddings and other events at the site," said Commissioner Lynda Tusoni.

No one from the public, except Tryon, attended last night's public hearing on his conditional-use-permit application.

Augustine said she received five written responses two in favor of the project, two neutral and one complaint.

Although Tryon is advertising his vacation rental as a "bed and barn" because the place has stables for six visiting horses, Augustine said it technically falls into the bed-and-breakfast category. As such, it will be required to collect Angels Camp's Transient Occupancy Tax. That 6 percent tax is charged to people who stay at hotels, motels and B&Bs in the city.

With two members of the planning commission absent, the vote for Tryon's conditional use permit was 3-0.
