Deputy clerk looks back along on long career

If you watch Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors meetings aired on Cable 8, you've seen the back of her head.

She's the lady with the short blonde hair, seated down front, taking notes and reading agenda items aloud for public record.

But Edna Bowcutt, 55, has done a lot more than take notes in her 22 years with the county, especially in her last 12 years as Deputy Clerk of the Board.

"A lot of people think that's all we do here," she said.

Bowcutt and her staff put together the board's weekly agendas, field hundreds of phone calls from the public, get new supervisors settled into their positions and keep official county records, while following the countless government codes that regulate their work.

Bowcutt cannot remember a time when she wasn't happy with her career choice.

"It's almost not like a job," she said. "It's always been so interesting."

Valley girl

Bowcutt was born in Modesto and moved with her family to Castro Valley, where she attended high school. Her first trips to the Mother Lode were with her family.

"We always spent our vacation up here," Bowcutt said. "We'd spend a week in Pinecrest."

By 19, Bowcutt was married and had a daughter. Over the next decade and a half, she had two sons. A second daughter a foster child joined her family when the girl was a teen-ager.

She was also married twice more.

"Third time's a charm," Bowcutt said philosophically about marriage. She has been married to Wayne Bowcutt, owner of Wayne's Mini-Mart in Tuolumne, for 26 years.

In 1980, when her daughter was to enter the eighth grade, she and Wayne were looking for a safer place to raise the children, outside the Bay Area.

It occurred to them to look into the area where Edna spent her childhood vacations. That trip to the foothills changed her life forever.
