The public access television studio in San Andreas will hold a community open house from 5 to 8 p.m. tomorrow.

The studio, at 429 E. St. Charles St. behind the Calaveras County Water District building, is the hub of public access television activities throughout the county.

Independent producers, many of whom have taken production classes at the studio, cover local events or produce other programs that are then cablecast on Channel 7, the public access channel for Calaveras County.

Ed Lark, studio manager, hosts several open houses a year to introduce county residents to the studio, its equipment and classes available for aspiring producers.

"Ours is a complete TV studio, with more equipment than many other studios located in large cities," Lark said. "It's the only studio in the country that I know of that charges nothing for classes and equipment use."

Public Access Television is supported through cable company fees. Calaveras County supervisors funnel part of the public access fees to the studio for equipment and classes, Lark said.

He said Friday evening's open house will include equipment demonstrations.

Lark says he is proud of the studio's analog and digital editing bays, and new duplicating system.

He said after completing a series of classes held at the studio, Calaveras County residents may check out digital camcorders, tripods, microphones and other equipment to produce video for television.

"The free classes at the studio guide people through the basics of videography and editing," Lark said.
