A 27-year-old man was arrested early this morning in connection with the Monday morning murder of a Jamestown man.

Stephen Michael Myers was arrested at his Seventh Street home in Jamestown. He is suspected of killing Donald Graham Hopkins, 34, by shooting him once in the head with a small-caliber gun.

Sheriff's Lt. John Steely said this morning that investigators believe Myers and another suspect forced their way into the Oak Hills apartment belonging to Hopkins and his girlfriend, Melissa Yvonne Berry, 29, about 1:30 a.m. Monday.

During a struggle, both Hopkins, a black man, and Berry, a white woman, were shot in their heads, Steely said.

Hopkins died. Berry, found inside the apartment by sheriff's deputies responding to a 911 call, was taken by air ambulance to a Modesto hospital.

Berry is recovering after doctors removed a bullet from her head Tuesday.

The couple's 4-year-old daughter was also in the apartment at the time, but investigators don't believe she witnessed the shooting, said Sgt. Chris Harrison.

Steely said Myers was arrested without incident.

In 2000, Myers pleaded guilty to possessing a switchblade knife and was sentenced to 18 days in jail. He did not serve his jail time however, and in November 2002 was arrested in Calaveras County for failure to appear and probation violation. At that time, he was booked into the Tuolumne County Jail and held in lieu of $10,000 bail.

He was released two days later after posting bail and appeared in court on the charges Jan. 13.

Sheriff's investigators were helped in the arrest by state parole officers, Tuolumne County District Attorney's Office investigators, California Highway Patrol officers and members of the sheriff's SWAT team.
