A man was found dead in a Jamestown apartment early this morning, marking the fourth homicide in less than two months in Tuolumne County.

Tuolumne County Sheriff's Lt. John Steely said deputies went to an apartment building on the 10200 block of Preston Lane after someone complained about yelling coming from apartment 308.

The apartment door had been kicked in and deputies found the body of a black man lying on the floor in a pool of blood.

A white woman was also there, shot in the head, Steely said.

The woman was taken to a Sonora hospital, then by air ambulance to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.

The names of the man and woman have not been released pending notification of their families. The manager at Preston Lane Apartments said he was told by Pinnacle Management Company and the sheriff's department not to talk about the incident or say who lived at the apartment.

Steely said a young girl, about 4 years old, was found unharmed at the apartment and taken into protective custody by Child Welfare Services.

"We are still investigating this homicide and this morning we will be talking to neighbors and any witnesses," Steely said.

The apartment building has been cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape and criminalists from the state Department of Justice will gather evidence today, Steely said.

Including this morning's homicide, there have been four killings since Dec. 2.

"I cannot remember when we've had this many homicides in such a short period," Steely said.
