Supervisor nears choice for planning commission

District 5 Supervisor Victoria Erickson is close to naming her district's new representative on the Calaveras County Planning Commission.

Erickson said she has interviewed five candidates for the job and planned to speak with at least one more applicant before making her choice, possibly later this week.

Next Monday, district supervisors will name their top candidates for each district's Planning Commission seat. Then commissioners must be voted in unanimously by the Board of Supervisors.

The District 5 seat is the commission's only vacant position. Rancho Calaveras resident Fred Katz resigned from the post in October.

"I'm looking for someone who is willing to research the issues and consider things from a proactive stance instead of a reactive stance," Erickson said.

"I'm also looking for someone who has strong private-property rights views."

Those who have applied to the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors for the commission: Katherine Bowers of Copperopolis, Betsy Duncan of Copperopolis, James Estorga of Valley Springs, Wes Hodgson of Valley Springs, David Lander of Copperopolis and Shirley Moore of Valley Springs.

Erickson declined to name her front-runner.

Whoever fills the 5th District's seat will have a full plate. District 5, which encompasses Copperopolis, Valley Springs and Rancho Calaveras, faces more growth and massive developments than the county's other four districts.

On future Planning Commission agendas will be Oak Canyon Ranch, a proposed 2,275-home subdivision, and Tuscany Hills, a subdivision and golf course on Tulloch Reservoir's shoreline.

Erickson said appointing a new planning commissioner would be her first big accomplishment as supervisor.

The new supervisor held a meeting at the Jenny Lind Fire Protection District two weeks ago. There, a handful of District 5 residents met with four commission candidates to discuss local planning issues.
