Crab feed fills Rotary coffers

Some 500 people cracked away at 1,700 pounds of crab at Frogtown on Saturday night.

"The music was good, and the crab was excellent," Clayre Quick said of the annual Angels-Murphys Rotary Club Crab Feed.

"Everyone seemed to be having a pretty good time," said Quick, a club member.

The cost for the informal party was $30 per person. People wore everything from jeans and T-shirts to khakis and ties.

Also, 151 donated prizes were raffled off to the public. Prizes included a 27-inch color television, a digital video disc player, a weekend getaway at the Groveland Hotel and gift certificates for stores and restaurants.

Proceeds from the event help support Rotary club programs, including the Miss Calaveras Scholarship Pageant, a community blood drive and student exchange trips to other countries.

Each year's dinner raises about $10,000, Quick said. Receipts were still being added, and Quick expected this year's event might amount to slightly less because a few tickets remained.

Nevertheless, she added, "they advertise it as the best party in the mountains. It always is."
