A 42-year-old woman apparently killed by her husband late Monday has been identified as Elaine Morehouse.
Tony Edward Morehouse, also 42, called 911 around midnight Monday and said he shot his wife in the head. While talking to a Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department dispatcher, he then shot himself.
When a deputy arrived eight minutes later, he found Tony Morehouse dead with a single gunshot wound to the head on the living room floor of the couple's house, on the 19900 block of Middle Camp Road.
Morehouse apparently shot himself, according to sheriff's reports. Deputy Rob Lyons and Sgt. Roger Dittberner found a deer rifle next to the man's body.
The officers then found Elaine Morehouse on a bedroom floor. Paramedics rushed her to Tuolumne General Hospital where she died early Tuesday.
A small child, younger than 2, was at the home asleep in another bedroom when the shootings occurred and was taken into protective custody, a sheriff's department report said.
Lt. John Steely said this morning he did not know if the young child was a foster child or a relative. Mrs. Morehouse was listed as a foster parent in Tuolumne County.
Steely said he had no information on previous instances of domestic violence at the house, and he found no record of the sheriff's department's being called to the house before.
