Murder-suicide leaves child homeless

A Twain Harte couple is dead this morning, after an apparent murder-suicide at their Middle Camp Road home.

A baby found at the scene by officers is in protective custody today.

Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department is not releasing the names of the couple until family members can be notified. Both were 42 years old.

Sheriff's Sgt. Bob Bogolea would not say whether the infant was their child.

A man on the 19900 block of Middle Camp Road called 911 at 11:48 p.m. Monday and said he shot his wife in the head during a heated argument, Bogolea said this morning.

The man told a sheriff's dispatcher that his wife was still moving and that he didn't know what to do, Bogolea said.

While talking with the man on the phone, the dispatcher heard a single gunshot.

Eight minutes after the call, Deputy Rob Lyons arrived at the house, looked through the living-room curtains and saw a man lying on the floor, Bogolea said.

Lyons and Sgt. Roger Dittberner, the second deputy to arrive, went inside and found a man on the floor with a single gunshot wound to his head. The officers found a woman in a bedroom, also with a single gunshot wound to her head, but she was still breathing.

The officers administered first-aid to the woman until an ambulance arrived. Paramedics took her to Tuolumne General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Bogolea said Lyons and Dittberner found a deer rifle next to the man.

The infant was found sleeping at the house and was taken in by Child Protective Services, Bogolea said.
