Tuolumne County Sheriff's investigators are still looking for a Columbia man suspected of killing 21-year-old Jennifer Lynn Coons on Dec. 1.

Kristopher Lee McDaniel, 30, continues to elude officers, said sheriff's Sgt. Chris Harrison.

"We are following up on some leads that have come up since his picture was in the newspaper," Harrison said.

Harrison said Coons, of Sonora, was shot once in the chest with a handgun at a remote location near Columbia. She died at Tuolumne General Hospital after being taken there by a man she flagged down, Jerry Coey of Sonora.

At the hospital that Sunday afternoon, Coey told deputies he stopped to help Coons at about 2 p.m. on Sawmill Flat Road near Columbia College.

He then drove her to the hospital and stayed until deputies could talk with him.

While not considered a suspect, Coey was booked at the county jail parole violation charges.

He remains held without bail.

A memorial service for Coons is set for 10 a.m. Monday at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home in Sonora.

Coons' mother, Marsha Coons, works as a photo lab technician at Wal-Mart, and co-workers have set up a fund at County Bank to help defray costs associated with her daughter's death.

McDaniel is described as a parolee at large, armed and considered dangerous. Investigators, who won't say whether the suspect and victim knew each other, have said they believe he is still in the county.

Anyone with information about McDaniel's whereabouts or information regarding the investigation is asked to call the Sheriff's Department at 533-5815, Detective Kelvin Moses at 533-5828 or the Crime Hotline at 984-1911.

Calls to the hotline can be made anonymously.
