An 80-year-old Sonora man died when his homemade road leveler ran over him in his driveway, the California Highway Patrol reported Wednesday.

Elvas F. Whittenberg died Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon, according to a California Highway Patrol report. Whittenberg's sister found him dead Wednesday afternoon and called the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office.

A Highway Patrol report indicates Whittenberg was using his truck and scraper Tuesday to spread gravel in his driveway in the Ranchos Poquitos subdivision off Highway 108 between Sonora and Twain Harte.

Whittenberg was trying to adjust the scraper when his pickup rolled forward. Whittenberg was knocked to the ground and became entangled in the scraper, according to the report. The scraper was attached to the back of his pickup.

The pickup rolled into Whittenberg's house.

Heuton Memorial Chapel in Sonora is handling arrangements.
