A Sonora High School junior was shot once in her upper thigh with a pellet gun Monday afternoon as she stood on a downtown Sonora street corner talking with friends.

The 16-year-old girl was released after receiving treatment at Tuolumne General Hospital for a single pellet wound.

The girl told Sonora Police Lt. Patrick Tonegato she was off campus about 12:30 p.m. Monday on yearbook business. She was standing on the corner of Theall and South Washington streets when she felt a sharp pain in the back of her upper thigh. She told her friends something just hit her, Tonegato said.

"Her friends saw the hole in her pants and the blood and took her to the hospital," Tonegato said. "The hospital then called us, which is standard procedure in gunshot wounds."

Doctors removed the pellet and gave it to Tonegato, who had it in his office Monday afternoon, along with the girl's bloodied clothing.

He said so far he has no clue who shot the girl or why.

The girl was not identified because she is a minor.

Tonegato said school officials have been notified about the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sonora Police at 532-8143.
