An educator and school administrator in Tuolumne County for the past 15 years, Dan White is moving on.

White, the county superintendent of schools, has accepted a position as the superintendent of Martinez School District.

White was elected to the county superintendent post in 1998 ran for re-election earlier this year but lost to challenger Joe Silva. White has since been interviewing with school districts around California in recent months.

Martinez School District, with around 4,400 students, is an ideal fit for him, he said.

"I looked at a couple of districts in the Bay Area, but if I could have picked the size of district I was most interested in, Martinez was perfect," White said.

The district has four elementary schools, a large junior high, a high school of about 1,200 students and an adult education program with around 1,200 students.

"Our house sold the same weekend I interviewed there, so the timing of everything seems to be working," White said.

The dark lining to this silver cloud is that White and his wife, Betty a K12 curriculum coordinator for Calaveras Unified School District will have to live apart for the time being.

"When I start full time there in January, my wife will rent a place in Calaveras, I'll rent one in Martinez and we'll go back and forth on the weekends."

This is new territory for the Whites who have been married for 31 years. But the two educators agreed it's important to live in the communities they work, he said.

White spent 10 and a half years as Jamestown School District superintendent before being elected to the county superintendent position.
