Three challengers will try to unseat two incumbents as they campaign for a pair of board seats at the Mark Twain Union Elementary School District.

The candidates are incumbents Joan Loomis of Altaville and Kathleen Russell of Angels Camp and challengers Timothy Randall of Altaville, Gary McGeorge of Angels Camp and Angelita Janofsky of Copperopolis.

The Mark Twain Union Elementary School District includes Copperopolis Elementary School and Mark Twain Union Elementary School.

The candidates addressed several district-related issues at a forum in Copperopolis last week.

Angelita Janofsky A 16-year county resident who works as an insurance adjuster for a Stockton company, Janofsky said one of her firm's main clients is a large school district in the valley. She said she often speaks with principals, teachers, staff, students and parents.

"It is essential to have an open mind, to absorb the facts and still be able to be objective with my feelings," she said. "I can use my work experience to do the same as a Mark Twain Elementary School District board member."

If elected, Janofsky said improving communication with teachers tops her list of priorities.

"By encouraging district and teacher communication, we would improve teacher morale, which would increase academic success."

Also, addressing the district discipline policy, Janofsky said, "I plan to work with the board to implement a new set of stronger guidelines, so we may improve the safety of the students by putting control back in the hands of the site principal and teachers."

Joan Loomis A 21-year foster parent, Loomis has served on the school board for 25 years. She has lived most of her life in Angels Camp.

"I started going to board meetings before my children got in school, and my oldest daughter is 41 years old now," Loomis said. "I've always been interested in the school system and getting involved in things where children were involved."
