TH Grade crash takes one life

A 56-year-old Soulsbyville man was killed early today in a single-vehicle crash on Twain Harte Grade.

Stephen T. Fenno was pronounced dead at the scene of the 3:50 a.m. crash, said California Highway Patrol Office Mike Buller.

Fenno was driving west on Highway 108 about half way down the grade when he drifted into the center divider, Buller said.

His new sedan then veered back across the westbound lane and off the road, glancing off a small tree and spinning into a larger tree before coming to rest on the shoulder. The right rear part of his car hit the tree.

Preliminary investigation shows that Fenno was going about 48 mph in a 65-mph zone, Buller said. The low speed, combined with no skid marks on the road and no major trauma to his body, indicate Fenno may have fallen asleep or suffered a heart attack, Buller said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Buller said there was no evidence that alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The crash is the second fatality in the past six weeks on Highway 108 east of Soulsbyville.

Dennis Dugan, 36, of Twain Harte died Aug. 15 when he lost control of his sports car and smashed into a hillside on Highway 108 east of Twain Harte Drive.

Officers said he was speeding at the time of the overnight crash.
