Angels Camp welcomed its new police chief, Anthony Tacheira, and his family Friday. The mayor, city hall staff, City Council members, the county sheriff and his officers, the Calaveras CHP commander and officers and others gathered at Angels Camp Police Station for Tacheiras swearing-in ceremony, and then stayed for a luncheon reception.

Angels Camp Mayor Debbie Ponte welcomed the new chief by giving him and each member of his family a golden frog pin, explaining that Angels Camp is known for its jumping frogs. To those gathered at the police station, she said, Were delighted to have Tony on board.

Tacheiras wife, Elizabeth, and his four children, Adam, 27, Jamie, 19, Nick, 18, and Jess, 14, were on hand for the lunch and swearing-in ceremony.

Although Friday was Tacheiras first official work day, he said he has been spending about two days a week in Angels Camp for the past three weeks, getting to know the department.

Ive been with the officers while they made a couple of arrests and have gone through the booking procedures in San Andreas. Ive toured the jail and dispatch, ridden patrol, he said. I had to, to get a clearer vision of the job, he said.

Tacheira said his first priority is filling the two vacancies on his force, for which he has received several applications.

After he fills vacancies and trains the new officers, he said, departmental training would be his next emphasis. I want to see further training for our officers, he said.

Tacheira comes to Angels Camp from Dos Palos, where he has been chief of police since 1995. He takes over the position vacated by Bill Nuttall, who retired in February.

Tacheira said he brings creativity and energy to his position as chief. Im willing to think outside the box, he said. I believe in the proactive approach to problems rather than simply reacting. I also believe its not enough to do a good job, the person who is a victim has to feel youre doing a good job.
