According to a sheriff's report, a deputy on patrol on Springfield Road saw a black Honda Civic being driven without headlights. The officer stopped the driver, Barton, who was wanted by California Youth Authority for a parole violation.

According to a Sonora police report, Brennan was driving east on Gold Street, and as he turned onto Barretta Street, he crossed over onto the wrong side of the road and almost struck several Cassina High School students. Colondres was a passenger in the car.

The students pointed out the car to a police officer at the school. The officer followed Brennan up Cemetery Lane and onto Morning Star Drive. At times, Brennan was going 60 mph, the police reports said. The officer stopped the car on Dusk Court as Brennan was making a U-turn to get out of the cul-de-sac.

The officer arrested Brennan, and because Colondres had an open container of liquor in the car, his parole officer ordered him detained.
