Happy New Year, baby

Emily Higgs of Sonora was hoping to have her fifth child early. But little did she know that having Daniel Higgs early meant he will hold the title as Tuolumne County's first baby of 2004.

"My due date was Jan. 10," Higgs said. "But by the time you have your fifth, you're ready to be done."

After four hours of labor, her 7-pound, 14-ounce, 20-inch-long son was born at 10:30 a.m. yesterday at the Sierra Birth Center in Sonora. In fact, he was born in the same room that all four of his siblings were delivered.

"That's another reason I wanted to have him early," Emily Higgs said. "I wanted to have him before they moved to the new hospital. I'm very sentimentally attached to this place."

Emily Higgs home schools her four children, Jonathan, 10; David, 8; Christina, 6, and Stephen, 3 1/2. She was thankful her fourth son was born early, before her kids' holiday break was over and she would have to go back to teaching them.

Emily called Daniel's birth "a 10."

"It went great,"she said. "There were no problems and it was pretty quick."

A Tennessee native, Higgs moved to Sonora in 1992 after meeting her husband, Jeff. The two met in San Jose through Jeff's brother, who was fixing up a house where Emily lived.

Jeff lived in Sonora, but they had a long-distance relationship until their engagement. They were married in Tennessee on June 20, 1992 and had an engagement service a month earlier at Chapel in the Pines in Twain Harte.

Jeff owns AAA Wesco Carpet Cleaning in Sonora and Emily is a full-time mother. Jonathan, David, Christina, Stephen and now Daniel, take up much of Emily's time.

"I think we're done," said Emily.
