Chinese Camp man victim of shooting

The man shot and killed early yesterday morning at a remote Calaveras County house in the Diamond XX subdivision, near Copperopolis, has been identified as Robert Lea Rochester, 45, of Chinese Camp.

Calaveras County Sheriff's Department Capt. Michael Walker said Rochester was in a garage between two apartments at a duplex at 5936 Chuckwagon Drive when he was shot once in the upper left side of his chest with a rifle.

He made it into a bedroom in one of the apartments, where he died.

Dianna Lynn Andersen, 55, who lived in the left half of the duplex, was arrested and booked on suspicion of one count of murder yesterday morning. She remains held without bail in the Calaveras County Jail. Her arraignment is scheduled for Thursday.

The shooting occurred about 12:32 a.m. yesterday, when Andersen confronted Rochester. He had gone to the duplex looking for his ex-wife, Phyllis Rochester, who had been staying with Andersen, Walker said.

Phyllis Rochester witnessed the shooting and went to a neighbor's house to call 911 before returning to the house to try and render medical aid.

Walker said Rochester thought his ex-wife was having a relationship with Gary Lee, who lived in the left half of the duplex.

The Calaveras sheriff's report released yesterday, about eight hours after the shooting, said Rochester arrived with several men and was aggressive toward a man at the house.

But Walker said yesterday afternoon that Rochester came to the house alone.

"There were several men at the right duplex, but they were not with the victim," Walker said. "There was no apparent imminent threat to anyone at the house."

Yesterday at 3:45 p.m., Calaveras County Coroner Kevin Raggio removed the body from the house, identified Rochester and confirmed that he died from a single gunshot wound. Raggio notified Rochester's mother of the death. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow, the coroner said.
