After 19 months as Angels Camp's finance director, Blaine Oborn is leaving the post next week to pursue jobs in larger cities.

Angels Camp's City Council met in closed session Tuesday night and "mutually agreed" to end Oborn's contract. City officials would not say who initiated the departure.

"The City Council and its finance director have agreed to terminate the current employment relationship. This will allow the city to explore more economical options for managing its finances ... ," the council said in a press release that also thanked Oborn for his work.

From his office in City Hall yesterday, Oborn said this is a "happy and sad" time in his life. He said he is looking forward to exploring other employment opportunities, but is sad to say goodbye to his colleagues.

"I am proud of the effort I put in and the accomplishments I made," said Oborn, 42, who produced the city's first capital projects budget. "It has been a good learning opportunity."

Oborn said he has applied to several cities, including Oakdale, for finance-related jobs. His last day as Angels Camp's finance director is Friday, Oct. 31.

Oakdale City Administrator Bruce Bannerman said there has been an opening for a finance director since last spring.

Bannerman said he couldn't comment on whether Oborn is an applicant.

There is no rush to fill Oakdale's vacancy, because the city is pleased with the job its interim finance director is doing, Bannerman said.

But the interim director said he doesn't want to stay permanently, so Oakdale officials would like to fill the position by the end of the year.

The finance director for Oakdale, which has 17,000 residents, makes $90,000 a year. Angels Camp, with a population of about 3,000, pays its finance director about $70,000.

Oborn grew up in the Bay area and earned a master's degree in public policy and administration from California State University, Sacramento. He worked as a state accounting manager in Sacramento for 13 years.
