Calaveras County administrators are close to hiring a new chief probation officer to replace Jim Moffett.
County Administrative Officer Tom Mitchell said the county is doing background checks on two finalists, one of whom will likely be offered the job. That could happen within seven to 10 days, he said.
Both finalists have worked in probation departments for more than 30 years, and both are employed by California counties, though Mitchell would not say which.
"We have two excellent candidates, in my opinion," Mitchell said.
The finalists were selected from three candidates who were interviewed Sept. 23. Mitchell said 10 people applied for the job.
Assistant Chief Probation Officer Rich Manders has been acting has chief of his department since Moffett left the post Aug. 7 to take a new job as chief probation officer of Inyo County.
Manders said he has accomplished his goal of making as few changes as possible.
"As I understand, we're well on our way toward having a chief, and I look forward to that," he said.
The new chief probation officer will manage both the adult and juvenile probation departments.
