Retired officer captures suspects

A Wallace man held two people at gunpoint Tuesday night after he said he saw them stealing from his neighbor's home.

When Calaveras County Sheriff's deputies arrived on the 7400 block of Stage Stop in Wallace about 11:30 p.m., they found a retired police officer pointing a gun at two men near the end of his neighbor's driveway.

The house is for sale, and no one is living in it, though there are still items inside. The sheriff's department declined to identify the retired officer.

Deputies arrested Darrell Lee Jenkins Jr., 23, of Galt, and Brandon Allen Woodcock, 20, of Lockeford on suspicion of burglary, possession of stolen property and conspiracy.

They said they found items from the home in the suspects' car.

But that wasn't the end of the matter.

A couple hours later, while on Ospital Road in Burson about 2:30 a.m., the deputies found a teenage boy walking along the road.

He was lost and injured from running into a barbed wire fence in the dark, a sheriff's report states. While trying to return the boy to his San Joaquin County home, deputies said they discovered he had also been involved in the burglary.

The boy told deputies he had hidden in tall grass and watched them searching the burglarized house.

He ran away and was trying to get home when the deputies found him.

He was also arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Jenkins and Woodcock were booked at Calaveras County Jail that night, and bail was set at $105,000 bail each. However, they were released last night on their own recognizance because the district attorney's office made a mistake by not having them arraigned in court within 48 hours of their arrest, a district attorney's office spokeswoman said.

The two suspects will be asked to appear in court, but no hearing date has been set.
