New lights shine at Dorroh

Things will get brighter at Bret Harte Union High School now that district board members have decided to retrofit the school's Dorroh Field with a new lighting system.

Bret Harte Union High School District board members gave an electrical contractor the OK to begin work on replacing the system when they voted to accept a contract with MUSCO Lighting at their meeting last night.

MUSCO, a national athletic field lighting company, will receive $73,000 for the two- to four-week project, paid with funds set aside to help modernize the Angels Camp school.

District Superintendent Joseph Wilimek said the new system will cut energy costs and allow for night-time track meets.

"It won't look like there are aliens landing," he said of the new lights, which will have hoods on them to direct light onto the field and track.

Wilimek said the new system should be installed by late October.

Also at last night's meeting, board members reviewed:

? An environmental hazards assessment report for the proposed Copperopolis High School. The report states the 40-acre site inside the Oak Canyon Ranch subdivision is fit for a school to be built on it.

Wilimek anticipates another five to seven years until the school is built to accommodate the expected rapid residential growth in the area.

? Teacher feedback from the school's new dress code. Teachers have said students with visible bra straps, chains and spikes need to be addressed in the policy.

Students can't wear clothing that shows cleavage or midriffs, and clothes can't advocate prejudices, tobacco or drug use. If students break the new rules, they could face lunch detention or even suspension.

The policy, which went into effect last month, is on a trial run until November, when officials will decide if revisions need to be made.

? Wilimek's goals for the upcoming school year, as outlined in a memo to the board.
