Sirens could be heard throughout Angels Camp yesterday as city firefighters drove hordes of children and their parents around town in shiny engines.

Renaldo 'Aldie' Broglio said Fireman's Fun Day has been around for more than 40 years. Broglio, who has worked with the Angels Camp Fire Department since 1971, was chairman of yesterday's gathering.

The free fire truck rides at the annual event in Utica Park hold a special place in many of the area firefighters' hearts. For many, the Firemen's Fun Day was the first time they rode in a fire engine when they were young. Broglio, a teenager when the fire truck rides began, said he never took advantage of the free trip around town.

"There's probably only two or three of us (in the department) that didn't ride the trucks," Broglio said. "But all our kids did."

Area kids could also participate in a dime toss, jump around in three different bounce houses, play Bingo or eat snow cones.

The Department and other volunteers also prepared a barbecue dinner of tri-tip, chicken, spaghetti, bread and salad for Fun Day guests. The meat was cooked in 30 metal barrels that could hold 20 chicken halves each, enough to feed 600 people.

Proceeds from the event go toward special equipment purchases for the department.

"It's a great day in the park for young and old," Broglio said.
