New library almost open

There are only a few finishing touches to be put on Columbia College's new Learning Resources/Media Technology Center. Construction on the 15,530-square-foot library began in February 2002. The doors will open Wednesday, Oct. 8, with a gala event the public is invited to attend. The library was planned to accommodate the 3,000 to 4,000 full- and part-time students who attend Columbia College each semester. The original library was built to serve about 1,500 students. The $8.1 million construction cost was covered by the state because Columbia College was considered "under-built" as far as library, office and audiovisual/television space went. A winding staircase leads students from the upper level of the library to a patio area next to the lake
