Tuolumne fire has new, old trucks

Members of the Tuolumne Fire Protection District will show off two "new" fire engines and celebrate the district's 100th birthday with an open house.

It will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at the firehouse at Main Street and Chestnut Avenue.

One of the engines is a 2003 Ferrara that cost $289,000. It was paid for with money from the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk, which has given the district $300,000 a year since opening the Black Oak Casino on North Tuolumne Road in May 2001. The Ferrara replaces a 1968 Crown engine.

The other "new" engine is a 1939 Dodge that the Tuolumne fire house bought new in Oakdale 64 years ago for about $4,000.

That engine, which has sat idle for years, was restored by inmates in the vocational auto body program at Sierra Conservation Center. The restoration cost about $3,000 for materials, said Tuolumne Fire Protection District Chief Keven Patton.

The money for the restoration was raised by Tuolumne Hose Co. No. 1, the volunteer arm of the fire district. No district money was used, Patton said.

The hose company was formed July 20, 1903, to fight fires in Tuolumne. It became staffed with paid firefighters, in addition to the volunteers, in 2001 as part of the agreement between the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk and Tuolumne County.
