An accident at New Hogan Reservoir near Valley Springs claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy Sunday afternoon when he and his neighbor, both aboard personal watercrafts, collided.

The man and boy, both from San Leandro, were friends.

The accident happened about 5 p.m. The boy, whose name was not released because of his age, was flown by helicopter from the scene and later pronounced dead at Doctors Hospital in Modesto.

The 33-year-old man, Ativale Maneafaiga, was uninjured.

The cause of the accident remains unknown. The accident is under investigation by the Calaveras County Sheriff's Department's Marine Safety Division.
