Girls' efforts go into print

After reading an article in a Christian magazine about unethical journalists, Noelle Rafferty decided to change the system from within.

Featuring crafty tips, local poetry and fashion articles for women who aren't supermodel skinny, the newly released local magazine "Outspoken" takes the tone of a hip, Christian community.

"I just wanted something that was going to be real," said Rafferty, 19, of Soulsbyville . "We wanted it to be more morals, and not the pounding Christian stuff (that) overwhelms you."

The first issue which came out yesterday deals with homeless pets and animal care. Next month's edition features hair secrets, clothing styles and a lot of pictures, Rafferty said.

Rafferty and her sister, Jolene Hiteshew of Crystal Falls, and friend Andrea Bourquin of Sugar Pine are editorial partners, and get help with their publication from family and friends.

"We're all kind of important, but I'm the editor because I've always loved English and I'm the only high school graduate," Rafferty said.

The other editors, Jolene, 15, and Andrea, 14, are students at Sonora High School.

The mini-magazine's first issue is 15 pages and carries a price tag of 50 cents, Rafferty said.

"The first run will be about 20 issues, and we'll print more if there's a demand," Hiteshew said.

"It's basically for fun, we just need a bit of money for the materials," Rafferty said.

Advertising is free for the first three months the editors hope to establish repeat customers as well as constant readers. Copies are available in McCloud's Pet Emporium in The Junction shopping center.
