South County school district looks at guns

A summer hunter-safety course held at Tenaya Elementary School has caused Big Oak Flat-Groveland Unified School District board members to rethink their gun policy.

The district doesn't run the hunter-safety course, but only provides space for the yearly class.

"We intend, unless the board directs me otherwise, to allow hunter safety to be on campus," Superintendent John Triolo said. The issue will come up at tomorrow's meeting.

The course hasn't caused any problems or concern in the past, and Triolo said he attributes the sudden attention to the difficulty Sonora Union High School District's board has been having with its own guns-on-campus policy.

While Sonora's board is wrestling over whether to allow guns on campus under strict supervision or to ban them completely, causing high attendance at meetings and many individual study sessions, Triolo said his board will have little difficulty with the issue.

"My feeling is, our policy allows for the hunter-safety course to be allowed on our campus," Triolo said.

"I think the board will probably be in agreement."
