Dogtown realignment on agenda

To prepare for the coming of the Highway 4 bypass, the Angels Camp City Council will consider realigning Dogtown Road.

The proposed bypass, which would funnel through traffic east of historic Angels Camp, would cross Highway 49 where it intersects with Dogtown Road. With the bypass, Dogtown could lose that intersection, or be relegated to right turns only onto Highway 49.

Angels Camp city council members tomorrow night will review a traffic study that suggests extending Clifton Lane to about where Gardner Lane meets Dogtown. Then, Gardner Lane's intersection with Dogtown would be shifted slightly south.

Clifton is nearby and parallel to Dogtown and intersects with Highway 49. Gardner stretches between Dogtown and Murphys Grade roads.

Council members will also discuss other realignment options at their meeting.

One option would be to make Clifton Lane into a cul de sac where it now meets with Highway 49. A new road, running to the north of Clifton, would start at the highway and end close to the adjusted Gardner Lane intersection with Dogtown.

The other option would leave Gardner as is and extend Clifton to meet Dogtown. Dogtown's intersection with Clifton would be about halfway between Highway 49 and Gardner.
